55 5x5s: Artist Statement
A ‘5x5’ consists of 5 random video clips, each clip lasting the duration of 5 seconds.
‘55 5x5s’ draws from 790 clips shot over a one year span. 5 seconds from various clips were chosen, and then randomly matched with 4 completely different clips. This occurred 55 times.
The "55 5x5s" project is an experiment on memory. It also acts as a form of diary. Memories are brief and random; a series of images from a certain experience containing inaudible sound bytes or distant background hum. This project is an attempt to create how my brain will categorize and display a year’s worth of memories. You know, in the future. When it’s all jumbled anyways.
The shooting process also creates an ability to be hyper-aware of your surroundings. You take more in. You listen more. You look around more. And then you shoot what interests you.
Because hey, if this isn’t nice, I don’t know what is.
